What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is living with awareness

Mindfulness is the practice of living with awareness. It is paying attention on purpose to ourselves: our thoughts, our words, our actions. It is living LIFE with FULL attention.

Mindfulness has to do with WAKING UP and living in harmony with ourselves and the world we live in. In the words of John Kabat-Zinn:

“It has to do with examining who we are, with questioning our view of the world and our place in it, and with cultivating some appreciation for the fullness of each moment we are alive. Most of all, it has to do with being in touch.”

Automatic Pilot

Most of us live life on automatic pilot without real connection to the activity we are undertaking. How many times have we driven somewhere and not remembe

red how we got there? How often do we complete chores or tasks with our mind twittering away with thoughts of this and that. We can all relate to this I’m sure.

Practising mindfulness through yoga, meditation, walking, movement practices is a great way to reconnect with ourself and the world around us. Next time you’re walking to work or to the shop why not make it a mindful walk: connect to breath, notice your body, each step, what you see, hear, taste, feel. Bring your full attention to the action of walking. Notice. Be aware.

It is this connection with breath and body that brings us fully into the PRESENT moment. A mindful practice is all about presence. Being aware of each breath, each moment as it unfolds.
